Environmental Strategies
In order to battle rising fuel costs as well as trying to clean up Select Van's carbon footprint on our ever changing environment Select Van has implemented a couple of new programs. Select is in the midst of creating their "Moving Green" Program. We have joined the U.S. EPA Smartway Transport Partnership, an innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution. Select Van's head of Environmental Strategy Julie Smith along with Fleet and Fuel Manager Regan Smith have together implemented some new programs that will cut our fuel costs as well as benefit our relationship with Smartway and the environment.
APU:
Select Van has purchased auxiliary power units
(APU) which are outside power sources or self contained generators that will
power our trucks while they are idling at truck stops overnight this will cut
down on fuel costs as well as cutting down the release of harmful carbon gases
into the environment.
Particulate Filters:
We are purchasing and using new technologies
such as particulate filters which are designed to remove diesel particulate
matter or soot from the exhaust gas of diesel engines.
Aero Dynamics:
Select Van is purchasing new nose cones and aero
dynamic mirrors for our trucks to increase fuel mileage.
Driver Training:
Our drivers will be going through extensive
training offered by Smartway in order to teach them ways they can help the
environment as well as increase fuel mileage.
We are also implementing our new NO OVER 70 mph policy which will
increase fuel mileage and safety.
Earth Homes:
All of Select Van's used tires are being donated
to Earth Homes which are homes built entirely out of recycled materials. The tires are primarily used for the
foundation of these homes.
Boxes:
Select Van now offers used boxes for all your
packing needs as well as our new tote rental system which completely eliminates
the use of cardboard boxes.
Biodiesel:
We are in the process of initiating our new
BIODIESEL program in which we will be partnering with local restaurants and
using there waste cooking oil to produce or own biodiesel fuel. Doing this will reduce harmful emissions from
our trucks because biodiesel fuel burns much cleaner. It will also reduce our dependency on foreign
oil.
